Better known by the common name Witch Hazel, Hamamelis pallida is an excellent shrub for brightening up the winter garden. Blooming from January to March, it provides plenty of texture and colour interest throughout the greyest months of the year. Lush green foliage emerges in spring, turning dramatic shades in autumn before the sweetly-scentred bright yellow flowers bloom after Christmas.
These hardy shrubs are easy to grow and demand very little maintenance to look their best. Water Hamamelis thoroughly after planting and once a week until well-established, after which it only needs to be watered during particularly dry spells. Lightly prune in spring to tidy the shrub and remove any dead or damaged branches.
Position your Witch Hazel plant in a sheltered spot that enjoys full or partial sun, ideally in slightly acidic, moist but well-draining soil. These striking winter plants are most often planted in flower beds and borders but grow well in pots too.
